Fuel Loyalty Cards

In the UK, the average motorist spends nearly £218.10 a month running their car, not including purchase costs or finance payments. In addition to insurance, regular refuelling is obviously one of the biggest costs. To help you earn back a bit of money on the cost of refuelling, we’ve created a round-up of the best fuel loyalty cards available on the market. Ready to find out which one might be the best for you? Let’s go.

Best fuel loyalty card in the UK

Loyalty cards are issued by retailers to encourage customers to continue shopping with their business. Most loyalty cards work in the same way: every time a customer buys something, they swipe their loyalty card and points are accumulated that can be exchanged for rewards and discounts at a later date.

In the UK, fuel loyalty cards typically work in this way and fit into one of two categories:

  • Supermarket loyalty cards
  • Petrol station loyalty cards

Supermarket loyalty cards

Strictly speaking, supermarkets don’t offer dedicated fuel loyalty cards. Instead, they include fuel points as part of their all-encompassing loyalty card schemes. The best supermarket loyalty cards for fuel points include:

Morrisons More

Free to sign up to, the Morrisons More card allows customers to earn five More Points for every £1 they spend in-store or online. Customers can also earn five More Points for every litre of fuel they buy at a Morrisons forecourt.

After collecting 5,000 points, Morrisons customers get the reward of a £5 voucher. You can manage your Morrisons More points through an app, which can be used to get your vouchers. As a rule, vouchers are valid for 56 weeks from the date you activate them.

It’s important to note though that Morrisons More vouchers cannot be used to buy fuel and other select items, including lottery tickets, prescription medicines, and tobacco.

Tesco Clubcard

One of the oldest and most popular supermarket loyalty card schemes, the Tesco Clubcard offers its members a wide range of rewards. You can use your card to collect points on food in-store and online, or for fuel at a Tesco forecourt.

Tesco Clubcard points are accumulated at a rate of one per £1 spent in-store or online; at Tesco petrol stations, it’s one point for every £2 you spend on fuel. Each point equals a penny you can accumulate towards a voucher, and you need to collect a minimum of 150 points (per collection period) to receive vouchers.

Unlike the Morrisons More card, you can spend your Clubcard vouchers on fuel at all Tesco petrol stations. Clubcard points can also be exchanged for vouchers you can use with a range of partners, including the full range of RAC roadside recovery cover.

Nectar Card

Nectar is the largest loyalty card scheme in the UK. Nectar comprises of a large number of partner companies, including Sainsbury’s, which means you can earn Nectar points at Sainsbury’s petrol stations.

You collect one Nectar point for every litre of fuel purchased at Sainsbury’s petrol stations.

One Nectar point is worth 0.5p, which means you’ll need to accumulate 200 points to earn £1. When you have collected enough points, you can spend them straight from your Nectar card by swiping it at Sainsbury’s petrol stations and other partner stores.

After Esso ended its long standing partnership with Tesco Clubcard in June 2019, you are now able to collect Nectar points at Esso Petrol Stations too.

Having fuel cards can save your business money, do your driver fuel expenses claims automatically and make it a 30-second job to reclaim your fuel VAT. Petrol station loyalty cards

In addition to dedicated fuel cards, which offer a wide range of benefits for businesses that provide a work-related vehicle or vehicles, many petrol stations have a loyalty card. The best petrol station loyalty cards include:

Shell Go+

Recently rebranded from Drivers’ Club, Shell Go+ loyalty cards work slightly differently from most similar schemes. The main difference is that the Shell Go+ loyalty card replaces the traditional points-based approach for member discounts based on visits to Shell petrol stations.

As a member of Shell Go+, you need to spend £10 or more on fuel or £2 or more in the shop to qualify for generous rewards. These include 3% fuel savings at participating Shell service stations (on up to 60 litres a month), 10% off hot drinks and Jamie Oliver deli by Shell and deli2go every visit, and £3 off Shell V-Power for every 300 litres bought.

BPme Rewards

BPme Rewards is BP’s fuel loyalty card. Using the card, you can earn points when buying regular fuel, BPultimate fuel as well as in-store purchases and car washes.

Once you’ve earned your points, you can redeem them in-store on fuel or shop purchases. Alternatively, you can save them up and redeem for vouchers with other BP partners, including Amazon and Marks & Spencer.

Best fuel discount credit card

There are also credit cards that offer fuel-based incentives or rewards for using them, similar to a fuel loyalty card. The best fuel discount credit cards include:

The Asda Cashback Credit Card

Asda does not offer a fuel loyalty card. However, the supermarket’s credit card offers cash back on purchases.

When using the card, you get unlimited cash vouchers worth 1% of everything you spend on the card at Asda stores and Asda petrol stations. You can also earn cashback when using the card elsewhere, but the rate is reduced significantly to just 0.2%.

It’s important to note that these vouchers cannot be redeemed against the purchase of fuel at Asda petrol stations.

AA fuel save credit card

The AA’s credit card is a cashback credit card that is specially designed to help motorists recoup some of the costs of keeping a vehicle on the road.

The AA FuelSave Credit Card pays 2% cashback to drivers who swipe their card to pay for under £500 worth of fuel every month, or 4% if you spend over £500. You can also earn 0.5% on all other spends.

In addition to cashback, after activating your AA card (by purchasing something using it), you qualify for 12 free months of AA Vehicle Roadside Breakdown Cover. The only downside is that the card comes with an annual fee of £42, which obviously subtracts from the amount of money you can save.

What is the best loyalty card for fuel?

All of the loyalty cards in this guide have their own pros and cons.

For instance, if you do most of your shopping at Morrisons, Tesco or Sainsbury’s while filling your car up at the same time, it would make a lot of sense to sign-up to your supermarket of choice’s loyalty card to earn points for fuel purchases.

Conversely, if you are on the road a lot for work, signing up to BP’s or Shell’s loyalty card schemes will likely save you a lot more money.

In short, the best loyalty card for you depends on where you shop, whether you use petrol or diesel, and how often you are on the road.
